The Lyons Community Foundation (LCF) exists to improve the quality of life, build a culture of giving and encourage positive change for the Greater Lyons Area. Aside from being our mission statement it is also part of the criteria used by the LCF scholarship committee to select the recipients of the annual Lyons Community Foundation Scholarship in memory of Steve Ralston. The recipients of the one thousand dollar scholarships this year are Emily Puzo, Zachary Tucker, and Kelsey Miner.
Emily’s love of drawing houses ever since she was little has influenced her dream of becoming an architect, and will she
be entering a five-year Masters of Architecture program at the University of Arizona. Emily plans on combining her architecture studies with studies in Landscape Architecture and Italian, with the intent of studying abroad in Italy.
Zach Tucker will be attending Colorado State University majoring in business. In addition to starting his own business, Red Wolf Sound, while in high school Zach has been a longtime Lyons community volunteer. Zach recently received the prestigious CSU Monfort Scholarship, and in keeping with the spirit of the LCF mission statement generously returned his LCF scholarship so it could be awarded to another student. Here is an excerpt from Zach’s letter explaining his intent, “I would like to return the scholarship so that it may be offered to another worthy youth in the community. I have been so lucky to receive so much financial support and I want to help another student who needs this scholarship more than I do.”
That student is Kelsey Miner. Kelsey will be attending Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, majoring in mathematics and secondary education. A choice inspired by working as a camp counselor and a volunteer math tutor. Kelsey will also be participating in the cross-country running program at Wartburg College, and will no doubt be as much an asset there as she was to the Lyons High School running program.
The LCF began awarding scholarships in 2008 with one $500 scholarship, and to date has awarded eight scholarships totaling seven thousand dollars. These awards are made possible through the generous donations of the Lyons Community. If you would like to support the efforts of the LCF in helping to fund higher education for Lyons area students your tax-deductible donations to the LCF Scholarship Fund are greatly appreciated. Checks can be made out to the LCF Scholarship Fund and mailed to LCF, PO Box 546, Lyons, CO. 80540.
