On Saturday, April 21, Lyons High School students Cobey Faubus and Nathan Schneider and teacher/sponsor Shannon Carheden headed to Lockheed Martin’s Deer Creek Canyon facility to compete in the seventh annual Code Quest.
Code Quest teams consist of two to three students who are asked to solve progressively harder problems with coded solutions in a two and a half hour long competition. Students could compete in a variety of programming languages (visual basic, C, or C++, Python, and Java).
There were two categories of competitors - advanced (students with more than a year of coding experience) and novice (students with one year or less experience). Cobey and Nathan competed in the novice category, programmed in Python and took home first place with 140 points. Out of the forty-two teams, both advanced and novice, they came in fourth overall in total points.
Both Cobey and Nathan opted to take coding classes at Front Range Community College through the concurrent enrollment program offered through St. Vrain Valley School District. Schneider said of the experience, “It was an honor to compete against other students in this type of competition.”
