April 1, 1928 - Dec. 31, 2009
After 81 years, life long resident of Boulder County, Ileen Mae Averill bid her final goodbye on December 31, 2009.Comfortable in formals or blue jeans, Ileen delighted in being an April Fools Day baby. She was born in Lyons, Colorado April 1, 1928 to Andrew Archie and Mamie Lahti Archie-Clark. As a young woman she loved dancing, music and singing in a duet with her sister Helen. Ileen graduated from Lyons High School in 1946 and married her sweetheart Kenneth Averill of Longmont, on June 8, 1946.
Ileen was a very independent person and undisputed queen of her very clean castle. Like Frank Sinatra, she always did things her way. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Ileen and Ken enjoyed many years of golfing and socializing with friends at the Flatirons Country Club, Thursday nights were reserved for her bowling league for many years at Olympic Lanes. Her other interests were her family, gardening, bridge club, and almost any type of activity you could think of. More recently she spent time reading and watching television while she stayed with her son and daughter-in-law in Westminster. Her family and friends knew not to phone her during the Channel 4 news hour in the afternoon because she was always expecting to be called as one of the daily prizewinners. On her 50th birthday in the 50th state, Ileen received a special golf certificate for hitting a hole-in-one while vacationing with her husband and son.
When recalling stories from her past, Ileen frequently said “now that’s going in my book.” If only she had written that book about growing up in Lyons, with her sister Helen; all we know is the title, “Tiger Town.” Her sense of humor always stayed in tact until the very end.
Ileen is survived by a daughter and son and their families: Cheryl and husband John Lawrence of Livermore, California, along with granddaughter Holly and great grandchildren Sabrina and Mason of San Carlos, Calif. and grandson Chris and great grandson Ethan of San Jose, Calif. Also, her son Keving and wife Bonnie Averill, along with grandchildren Corey, now serving in the U.S. Army, and Kyli of Westminster. Ileen’s husband Ken preceded her in death on September 2, 1984.
The family would greatly appreciate donations to Hospice of Boulder and Broomfield Counties (2594 Trailridge Drive East, Lafayette, CO 80026), an organization that treated Ileen with exceptional care. Also, please don’t smoke – if you do, please quit.
