Gary Wayne Walker
August 19, 1951 – April 25, 2013
Former Lyons resident Gary Wayne Walker passed away in Hay Springs, Nebraska on April 25, after a three-month battle with cancer. He was sixty-one years old.
Gary was born August 19, 1951, and raised in Springfield, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents Virginia Lee and Norman A Walker Jr., and his ex wife Lissa Walker. He is
survived by his daughter Brieanne Walker of Lyons; two brothers, Tim Walker and his wife Denise Steving of Pinewood Springs, and Steven Walker and his wife Carla Trost of Hanover, Virginia; a sister, Susan Walker and nephew Ian Walker, both of Springfield, Virginia; and an aunt, Denise Houge Hoff of Milford, Virginia.
Gary relocated to Lyons in the early 1970’s, and was one of the first “long hairs” to move to Lyons. He was a shipmate on his good friend Dave Pearson’s sailboat, and sailed around the Caribbean for several years. Pearson owned the RMI building on Fifth Avenue where Gary lived and raised tropical birds for Dave’s pet store in Boulder. Gary had several talking pet parrots among other birds, and was an avid Jimmy Buffet fan. On one occasion, Gary took his favorite parrot, Magnus, down to the KBCO studio in Boulder, and won tickets and a limo ride to a Buffet concert at Red Rocks. Gary was also a master carpenter during the rest of his working career. Gary had a contagious smile, and loved to drink rum in true “pirate style.”
He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family. A celebration of Gary’s life will be held Sunday, May 12, at noon at the Outlaw Saloon here in Lyons.
