It’s heating up outside, and the days are longer. It is indeed summer. So many of us are thinking about summer BBQs and grilling up some meat. Why not try grilling some beautiful vegetables, or cutting up fresh fruit for your meals instead? For cooling off what about trying out some raw dessert recipes, or pulling out the smoothie recipes for breakfast?
Take a look at everything that grows in abundance during the balmy summer months: apples, apricots, avocados, sweet peppers, beets, berries, melons, eggplant, figs, mangoes, peaches, plums, nectarines, summer squash, and much more. With so much to choose from, it’s virtually impossible not to create something delicious during the dog days of summer.
There are so many reasons to go plant-based. Here is a little added inspiration. You may lose weight. Plants are low in calories and high in nutrients. This means that eating plants will give your body a big nutritional bang for its buck. So you’ll eat less, need less and feel fuller. Your digestion will improve.
Because plants, particularly raw plants, have so many nutrients in them your body has to do little work to digest them. The digestion process is easy, efficient, pleasant and works perfectly without any extra effort or stress on your part. You will have more energy. Plants give our bodies instant energy because they require so little digestion, their nutrients shoot right into our blood stream to give us instant, lasting energy. You will sleep better. Eating a diet filled with a rainbow of fruits and veggies is your key to getting balanced nutrition, and balanced nutrition is crucial for getting stellar sleep.
If you aren’t already convinced, your health will improve. Who doesn’t want to improve their health? Because your immunity is tied to your gut. A healthy gut equals a healthy immune system. Eating a plant-based diet makes a gut really fortified. Eating a plant based diet also means that you’re flooding your body with awesome immune-strengthening nutrients on a daily basis and not just loading up on sugary orange juice when you feel a cold coming on. There are so many reasons to eat mostly plants, these are just some of those reasons.
Here’s a fun treat to get you started. Trade ice cream for “nice cream” made from frozen bananas. It takes a few minutes to prepare, and has only about 110 calories; with no sugar or guilt.
2 bananas chopped and frozen
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
1 tablespoons Nut butter (leave out for 0 fat)
Peel the bananas and cut them into small pieces.
Freeze them for four to six hours on a plate lined with parchment paper.
Put the frozen bananas, chocolate powder and nut butter into a food processor or blender and pulse until smooth. Scrape down the sides as necessary.
For a soft “Nice Cream,” serve immediately.
For a firm chocolate banana “Nice Cream,” transfer it back to the freezer for at least an hour.
