Bernice “Bernie” Ruth McCain passed in peace Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at her home in Lyons, at the age of 91.

Bernice was born February 9, 1926 in Haigler, NE to Henry and Edna Kraus. In 1943 she married Grant Jones of Wray, Colorado and together they had five sons, they later divorced. In 1972, she married her beloved husband Merle McCain who was her soulmate for the last forty-five years of her life.They enjoyed traveling and fishing and together, visited many parts of the country creating many fond memories. She

also enjoyed spending time with her children and hiking with her grandchildren. She was a master seamstress, crocheter, and quilter, and throughout her lifetime created many beautiful works of art with her talents. She has passed some of these talents on to her grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy. During her time in Wray, she was a contributing writer for the South Laird column of the Wray Gazette. She was also an adventurer traveling to the Ascension Islands with her NCAR employment out of Boulder, and spent many months there assisting with weather balloon launches.

As much as Bernie was gentle and loving, she was also a strong woman, raising five boys on a rural farm in Wray, taking her eldest son’s Harley for a spin, and even coming face to face with a mountain lion while protecting her dogs. Bernice’s achievements in life are numerous but she will also be remembered as a woman of God who loved and is loved. She will be dearly missed.

Bernie is survived by her husband of forty-five years, Merle “Mac” McCain of Lyons; sons: Stanley Jones of Greeley, Jerry Jones of Ogallala, NE, Martin Jones of Pine Bluff, WY; daughters-in law: Janice Jones of Kamiah, ID, Sharon Jones of Ogallala, NE, Betty Wedan of Longmont; grandchildren: Thomas and Cecilia Jones, Stephanie Brown, Colleen Jones, Lana and Bob Leahey, Sean Jones; brothers-in law: Jim McCain, Leonard McCain, Gene McCain, Dean McCain and wife Mary; sister-in-law: Margaret Billings; great grandchildren: Skylar Jones, Keelin and Lillian Brown, Holton and Payton Castro, Ryan Jones, and Paxton Leahey.

She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Edna Kraus; sister Maxine Kraus; brother Henry Eugene Kraus; and sons Bobby Clyde and William Jones.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Humane Society. A graveside service will be held at the cemetery in Lyons, on Saturday, January 13, at 10 a.m.
