The Lyons Lions Cross Country Team came ready to battle a new high altitude 5K course at the Battle Mountain Husky Invitational this past Saturday in Eagle Vail. The day began with a chill in the air, but the sun warmed things up quickly for the start of the meet.

“This was a super tough course, but everyone stepped up in a large way to make a great impact. I couldn’t be prouder of the way the team performed. Everyone gave 110

percent,” said senior Kylee Udovich.

In an exciting race with many strong finishes, the varsity girls earned 6th place overall out of nineteen teams. Freshman Quin Gregg led the girls’ team, placing 8th overall with a time of 21:52. Junior Katie Fankhouser (22:38) returned from a kayaking camp in Canada and ran her first race of the season, placing 19th overall. Senior Kylee Udovich (23:28), sophomore Hannah Thomas (24:24), and senior Jewel Thomas (26:40) rounded out the varsity squad.

For the varsity boys, junior Isaac Roberts ran his first race this season, and placed 6th overall with a time of 18:31. Junior Simon Stone also placed in the top 15 for the Lions, finishing 14th with a time of 19:07. Senior Colton Jonjak-Plahn (19:41), junior Nick Boggess (20:17), and junior Jordan Shackelford (21:18) finished strongly, earning the varsity boys’ team 7th place out of twenty-one teams.

Senior Laura Hickey (29:14) also ran her first race of the season, leading the JV girls’ team after battling injury this summer. Freshman Katie Roberts (29:20) and freshman Chloe Els (29:26) crossed the finish line close together, followed by junior Catherine Darrow (30:40).

Freshman Arjen Wynja (21:44) led the pack of Lyons JV boys through the hilly course, followed by junior Harrison Abernathy (22:23), sophomore Nick Parker (22:49), junior Felix Sykes (24:18) and freshman Grant Gau (25:20).

Coaches (Mark) Roberts, Henson, Stone, and (Miriam) Roberts were very pleased with the team’s attitude and preparation this week, and it was apparent in the progress everyone made in their races.
