Both the boys and girls Lyons High School cross country teams claimed Mile High League titles last Wednesday (October 12) at Dawson School in Lafayette. Coach Mark Roberts was extremely pleased that his runners “ran with purpose, focus, patience and true grit!” Both races were a battle as the boys were tested by a talented

and deep Heritage Christian team; while the girls equaled Nederland High School with fifteen points, but were able to win by relying on Lyons’ fourth runner coming in before Nederland’s fourth runner. This was truly a team effort recognizing that team (the camaraderie and spirit of each member showing up daily over months to inspire and encourage all) matters most.

The boys started things off with an excellent execution of their game plan. They finished 1st - Isaac Roberts (Mile High League Boys' Runner of the Year),  3rd - Field Soosloff, and 5th - Colton Jonjak-Plahn. Those three held the fans in suspense as they did not take hold of those positions until the last minutes of the race, but did so gallantly, as all three ran their fastest times ever. In doing so, the trio earned 1st Team All-Conference honors by virtue of a top-7 finish. The next wave of runners included Simon Stone in 9th, Landon Milbrath in 10th, and Adam Crowl with a personal best (PB) time to secure 12th. These runners earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors. The rest of the Lyons runners were as follows: 17th Jordan Shackelford, 23rd Senior Nathan Schneider (bettering his personal best [set last week], by over 35 seconds), 27th Nick Boggess, 32nd Chase Jonjak (PB), 37th Charlie Gau, 38th Holden Soosloff (PB), 44th Nick Parker (PB), and 49th Julian Nelson with a huge PB.

In the girls race, Georgia Barone placed 4th, Katie Fankhouser with another personal best placed 5th, Kylee Udovich 6th, and Madeline Watts 7th. They also earned 1st Team All-Conference honors, and Sarah Roberts (season best and 10th) and Alora Cross (14th) earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors. Also finishing for Lyons: Jewel Thomas with a SB and 17th, Hannah Thomas with a two minute PB and 18th, Hope Kincaid SB and 22nd, Laura Hickey 26th, and Catherine Darrow PB and 32nd.

Next up for the Lions is the regional meet that will be held on Thursday, October 19, at Lyons High School. Lyons should do well and earn a spot at the state meet.

After this meet there will be six members plus an alternate from both the girls and boys teams representing Lyons once more on October 28, in Colorado Springs at theState Meet. It is a huge honor to represent the team, school, and town, which these runners realize completely.  If you see any of the cross country team members around town, give them a friendly shout-out. It will surely add a pep to their step along with some extra incentive as they reach the final step of their season!
