The Other Disaster

There is a second disaster not seen by cameras.

A reliable source observed a Lyons resident sifting through the remains of her home. She found pieces of memorabilia broken in her yard. Her posture was one of disbelief. She had been crying but there were no more tears to let flow. Her face was distant. A neighbor brought her a small bag of potato chips from the relief center at the elementary school. It snapped her out of it. She found a smile.

It would have made a good commercial for Lays Potato Chips, like the Ronald McDonald commercial after the 9/11terrorist attacks. The puzzle for you, dear reader, is to ask which version of the women reflects her mental health, the state of her heart? Perhaps both? Will the damage be shrugged off in the coming days or will it linger, fester and emerge as other problems?

Consider Psalm 23 - The Devine Shepherd

  • The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want;
  • he makes me lie down in green pastures; he restores my soul.
  • He leads me in pathes of righteousness for his name's sake.
  • Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
  • I fear no evil for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
  • You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies;
  • you anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows.
  • Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;
  • and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Each of us has stared into a nightmare. As bad as it has been, it could have been worse. What if the siren was flooded out hours before the Pinewood Springs dams failed? What if felled trees clogged the canyon above Meadow Park and a deluge of Apple Valley climbed faster than the sprinters? What if red rocks, boulders and mud descended into a subdivision? What if curious children couldn't resist their natural desire to explore?

You're not required to be a Christian to understand how extraordinarily fortunate we have been. If you understand Psalm 23, I mean REALLY understand Psalm 23, then you have a gift of disposition that will be drawn on before the final chapter of our flood story is written. There will be a person that can't be reached by a bag of potato chips. Be there.
